The Council has two categories of examination:

(1)  The Qualifying Examination Part I and Part II, which leads to enrolment on the Canadian Medical Register as a Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) when a candidate holds an acceptable degree in medicine and has completed a minimum of twelve months of satisfactory postgraduate medical training.

(2)  The Evaluating Examination for graduates of international medical schools, the list of which is published annually. Success at this examination is one of the conditions required for entrance to the Qualifying Examination of Council except:

for graduates holding a diploma from a medical school accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the U.S.A.

The Council also sponsors and is engaged in research in the field of evaluation of medical graduates so as to assume its share of responsibilities for the protection and health care of the population of Canada.
